Architectural and urban designer Nicole Moyo shares her favourite places for inspiration in Miami

“There’s no place in the world that compares to the unique feel of Miami,” says Nicole Moyo, a Zimbabwean born, South African bred, architectural and urban designer in the city of Toronto. Moyo has a passion for human-centred design and will be bringing this to the 2024 Annual Design Commission at Miami Design District, in collaboration with Design Miami
Curatorial Lab, titled “Pearl Jam’.

Moyo is inspired by Miami as a “living canvas, every corner bursts with creativity, and each neighbourhood tells its own story through the cultural expressions of architecture, food, and fashion. The city’s vibrant energy encourages you to look beyond yourself, offering opportunities for growth and understanding through its diverse communities.”

Inspired by Miami’s inclusive atmosphere, she believes this “creates a space where art, history, and people converge to form something truly remarkable. For me, Miami has been the place where I’ve had the freedom to express my creativity, explore new ideas, and push my boundaries, all within the city’s welcoming embrace. Its blend of tradition and innovation creates a sense of belonging, inspiring me and others to find and share our unique voices. Whether you’re wondering about its lively streets, savouring its eclectic culinary offerings, or immersing yourself in its art scene, Miami invites you to grow, collaborate, and be part of something much bigger than yourself.”

A Love Supreme (Wynwood Saints) by El Mac

Sends a delicate message about destigmatizing stereotypes, using the powerful scale of a massive mural in Wynwood to celebrate resilience, identity, and human dignity through intricate, soulful portraiture. It’s not just a mural, it’s a message.

Buckminster Fuller Fly’s Eye Dome

Located in the Miami Design District, the “Dome” is an inspirational landmark, a piece of repurposed functional architecture as art with its visionary geodesic bubble design, creating the coolest underground parking entrance I’ve ever seen.
