OPEN Architecture has deservedly earned a name for its founders, Li Hu and Wenjing Huang, for designing several of China’s most original and unconventional buildings, from UCCA Dune, an art museum nestled beneath coastal sand dunes, to Chapel of Sound, a sculptural open air concert hall that overlooks part of the Great Wall of China. The Sun Tower, completed in 2024, is no exception, exemplifying creativity, culture and innovation.

We were engaged to tell the story internationally of how this distinctive cultural venue in Yantai, China, combines geometry with natural phenomena, responding to its environment of sun and sea. The conical structure of The Sun Tower rises from an amphitheater of 164 ft diameter to a height of 164 ft and is open on one side, allowing views of the sun rising over the sea.

The hub includes an outdoor theatre, exhibition spaces, library, café and bar, and a special Phenomena Space. OPEN’s founders designed this with the intention that the architecture will reconnect people with ancient wisdom in respect to the spiritual power of nature in everyday life.

Camron placed major global stories on the project across a diverse range of media, from architectural to lifestyle, including in-depth articles in Architectural Digest, Azure, Designboom, Wallpaper, Frame, Interni, Hypebeast, Domus and Elle Decor Italia. Accompanying messaging emphasised the practice’s credentials in creating cultural buildings that sparked the imagination and acted as a lighthouse attracting large numbers of visitors, building awareness and reputation for the practice.
